Esoldun - LP
France, 1987
Rockabilly / Country / Bluegrass
Excellent compilation of rockabilly obscurities by little known West Virginia composer and singer Bill Browning. Haunted music from the Empire, released on a tiny French label in the mid-1980's (?!). Exhaling that raw and eerie beauty David Lynch told us about.
I don't know if that Ken Burns's documentary about Country music was another CIA psy-op, but god have I been obsessed with everything country, hillbilly and Grand Ole Opry since I watched it last year. So, trust my sick brain, this compilation of obscure rockabilly singer Bill Browning, contains some top drawer stuff.
Raw, fierce and haunting at the same time is exactly the combination that makes me loose my mind, whenever I get into my country digging habit, and that's exactly the words I'd choose to describe Bill Browning's songs. The beauty of it lies in the fact that the genre's lighthearted jolliness can barely hide the song's intensely melancholic undertone. Special mention to the novelty gimmicks, like the train whistle on the heartbreaking "Dark Hollow". (VG+ / VG+)
