No one can ignore the irresistible ascent of Bar Italia far outside circles of NTS listeners and Dean Blunt nerds, and indeed there's something irresistible in their music. Produced by Vegyn, Eros In The Bunker is the first release by Double Virgo (2/3 of Bar Italia) and sounds exactly like you think it sounds like , if you've been attentively following the latest developments of trendy indie music.
There sure are annoying things about the hype that surrounds Bar Italia and about anything related to Dean Blunt - silly prices, attitude, you name it - but to be fair, can't say the hype is not justified. No one can deny that Dean Blunt's influence on contemporary music is huge, and I'm not just talking about the 'I don't care' attitude that has been embraced by many, and now force us to witness terrible live sets by hooded men sitting behind laptops, fiddling with a backing track in VLC Media Player and mumbling disembodied lyrics. I'm talking about the vibes (washed out, skeletal and well-rounded at the same time), the format (1:30 min long pop songs), world views (nihilistic embrace of capitalist realism)
the comparatively smaller hype surrounding Double Virgo is also justified : I've been listening to A LOT of these recent shoegazy, grungy indie releases, and I can say that very few bands succeed in releasing music as consistent and as addictive as Double Virgo's.
Chlorine and No Sweat are instant hits and the other songs just as good. Stuff you can listen over and over. In their case, the 'I Don't Care' thing is just an attitude and the grind is real.
Ah, and it comes with an additional remix by Vegyn, exclusive to the vinyl, and that is also really nice. (NM/NM)
