from here on it’s all - repeated passages

If Gyeongsu is now a relatively familiar name in French electronic music microcosm (with the help of this Time Is Away's compilation), his debut release as from here on it’s all (a duo with June) is only a couple of years old. Spoken words in Italian on a record that evokes grey skies over Venice.

I first heard Gyeongsu and June’s demos a while ago, probably even before the pandemic; like most artists I know who eventually decided to start making their own music, the road between the first scribbled ideas to the actual release is long. Retrospectively, I can now say that a lot of what could define Gyeongsu’s sound was being developed on this from here on it’s all project: sparse and rich arrangements, an indie-adjacent song format and a strong studio / acoustic vibe.

Now, if you compare this repeated passages EP with Gyeongsu’s following releases, this debut record is a more ambient-leaning indie record than the rest of his work. And the immense ambient field, It evokes to me a very specific geographic scene, the Venice one, championed by Gigi Masin. But more than a scene, it’s maybe the city itself that I picture whenever I hear these 4 songs sung ("spoken" would be more correct) in Italian. Not the Piazza San Marco flooded with tourists Venice, but the grey, chill and quieter Venice: dead-ends, tiny bacari, empty churches and aqua alta.
