Kronos Quartet - Kronos Quartet
Kronos Quartet - Kronos Quartet
The record that established Kronos Quartet as the first and only string quartet known outside of circles of classical music connoisseurs, France Musique or BBC Radio 3 listeners. It also marks their first recording of the work of a composer they'll soon be tightly associated with: Philip Glass. Their rendition of Glass's String Quartet No. 2 was an instant classic, and made things very hard for other ensembles to give a conclusive interpretation.
Apart from Glass, the selection of composers the Quartet decided to record is wild, yet coherent. Special mention to the string arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze that somehow answers Aulis Sallinen's String Quartet No. 3. I don't know they came up with it, but it just works!
