Raw & uncompromising Downtown No Wave private press. Recorded by Martin Bisi, the iconic NYC post-punk producer, this mystery of a record sits perfectly next to James Chance, Liquid Liquid, ESG, DNA, Glenn Branca etc. Probably very rare.

Stumbling about this record, I was extremely surprised to find out that there was still grey areas surrounding this specific bit of modern music and that some excavation work still needed to be done: I'm talking about NYC's No Wave, that is to say one of the most revered and documented scenes in recent counterculture history. But no, no one seems to know about this record on the internet appart from the musicians themselves, who contributed to its Discogs entry in a very enlightening way, I must say.

Recorded in 1990 in the same studio and by the same people who recorded Arto Lindsay, Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Material, etc., John Farakhan! has the exact same energy one finds in the music recorded by NYC art rock acts like DNA & cie: an uncompromising mix of funk and punk that could only happened in NYC. Though it was recorded at BC Studio, it has a much more lo-fi / DIY feel than, say, Sonic Youth's EVOL that was recorded at the same place by Martin Bisi, but is just as angry and nasty. Obviously a very rare historic document and a good record too!(VG+ / VG+)
