Mike Rep And Friends - Darby Creek Drifter
Mike Rep And Friends - Darby Creek Drifter
Outsider Country and Lo-Fi Folk Rock by American iconoclast Mike Rep. Some stunning songs including a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes". Check "She's An Outsider" or "Mr Bo Derek" If you're into Daniel Johnston or Simon Joyner. Another treasure buried in some dollar bin in west of France...
While the A-side is more bluegrass sounding, the B-Side of this Darby Creek Drifter,LP is a flawless collection of loner folk songs, some of which written my Mike himself, like the gorgeous ballads "She's An Outsider" or "From A Stone". They are Lo-Fi and gritty, but most important, they are good!
With a career spanning over 40 years, Mike Rep knows how to be a tongue-in-cheek outsider punk, but also how to write simple, bare but heart-breaking songs. That being said, his cover of "Pale Blue Eyes" is just as gracious.
Genuine outsider music by a free-spirited musician and songwriter, and not just some music that pretends to. Probably released for his friends and aging fans in 2014, this is a ridiculously good record for the price you'll pay. Glad serendipity put in on our path. (VG+/VG+)
