Three Lobed Recordings - LP
US, 2008
Psychedelic Rock / Avant-Garde / Experimental
Another release by Matt Valentine, this time as a duo with Erika Elder. Eerie psychedelism and raga-like ambient. Sleep paralysis material from the mid-00's and a superb artwork this time, unlike this one... Obviously recalling Laraaji, but in a much more pensive and much less optimistic way.
Freely inspired by Indian classical music, the aim of the record is quite obvious: to translate into music one's experience of feverish dreams. And it achieves its goal. It's a very simple record, not trying to change the course of a long history of US psychedelia, but it offers genuinely introspection-igniting music.
I wouldn't call it meditative, as I feel this adjective is mostly affixed to calming, blue skies-kind of ambient music. Ragas Of The Culvert / Total Loss Songs is not exactly that. It's eerie, heavily clouded music, and not relaxing/calming/soothing, at least not in the neo-liberal self-care way we mostly referred too. But it's definitely a great album to ponder on the ineffable chaos we're living in.
