Cute post-rock instrumentals by UK trio State River Widening: guitars, drums and marimbas. Probably how Tara Clerkin Trio would have sounded like if they had recorded in the late 1990's

Some music has been recorded at the best time it could have ever been recorded. Let me explain my reasoning.

This LP is the first and the best record State River Widening ever released. And that's not surprising. The following LP's were released in 2003 & 2004 and heavily suffer from the way the overall sound of post-rock and indie instrumental music has become much less gritty in the early 2000's, drowned in digital reverbs and post-production softwares. 

The charm of their first album lies in the tension between the relative dryness of the recording of the acoustic instruments and the lyricism of the compositions. This is especially true with the slowest tunes like Drift Brake or Le Mars.

State River Widening's self-titled debut is the kind of nice soothing indie instrumental LP that must have have flourished during a short period, and that still needs to be discovered again. (NM / NM)
