Love Theme Music - CD
France, 2024
Soundtrack / Ethereal / Electronic

A compilation of songs composed for films; or, a recomposed soundtrack for a film that never was. A manifesto of some sort for Love Theme Music, a young Parisian label with a focus on OST's. Ethereal, emotional & eerie: soundtracks for our times.

11 songs from 11 composers with very different backgrounds, from which emanates a similar sense of  - how to say that? - "escapism". But then, I guess that's the primary function of cinema - from The Wizard of Oz to The Turin Horse  - and thus, of the music composed for soundtracking purposes - "escapism" - to help one develop a new sense of perception, adopt a fresh point of view on one's surrounding reality by substituting from one's attention everyday nature for fiction. More than escapism, it's a dreamlike landscape that these Images For Love offer to the listener, a world of fantasies, both eerie and wonderful.

The compilation also reveals a parallel world, coming out of a network that rarely intersects with the music network I'm used to, that of film festivals. It's international in the same way as film festivals are international. Music from French directors and French musicians, from South American films and US composers indistinctly sit next to each other. Of course, it's not a random set of tunes; it's been carefully composed by Arthur Bellot, the person behind Love Theme Music, with material he either commissioned or heard in films.

All songs bath in a similar light but exhale different notes: Ben Shemie and Bug Bus Piano invoke the indie sleaze of Gregg Araki's 1990's teenage apocalypse, Eduardo Williams & Alex del Rio's music evokes a familiar strangeness, similar to that of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films, while Bertrand Bonello reflects on the sounds of big budget Sci-fi films with his arpeggiator-relying theme for Aude Léa Rapin's Planète B.

I can't start thinking about the hundreds of emails sent to round off this compilation. It sure is a labour of love. And this is the kind of DIY takes that flourish in the fringe of billion-dollar industries we'll never cease to support. (M/M wholesale: shops, contact us)
