We Are Trees - Boyfriend
We Are Trees - Boyfriend
The epitome of Indie Sleaze!!! This EP has it all, a true snapshot of the late 2000's but its cult status can't be explained without mentioning the high quality of these 4 songs. Ridiculously well written and arranged tunes for a myspace band of bedroom indie pop on a very limited budget.
Golden American Apparel jacket, cigarettes, Terry Richardson glasses and Justin Bieber haircut: the artwork leaves little doubt concerning the year of release of this EP. Hearing this music on a record is kind of a miracle as few of these teenage indie bands ever got to release their music on any physical format. Most of it was simply uploaded on Myspace, and tragically disappeared forever when Myspace's servers crashed in 2018. At the time of its release, I couldn't care less about this indie sound, synonymous with the Brooklyn hipster type, as, a hipster myself but of another kind, I would only listen to electronic music, fusion jazz, OPN and Lil Wayne... but that's another story.
Reading this James Nee's interview from 2011 was extremely moving as he expressed, as a very young man, his bitterness regarding his small coastal town's lack of cultural policy. And I can imagine the suffering he's been through, as this EP is a testimony of how gifted he was. Another indictment against a lack of public engagement in culture and youth whenever you leave Paris or NYC, and, in the same time, a strong example of artistic determination from a Victoria Beach teenager.
